WRITING PROMPT #13: SOCKS

Yesterday was Day 1 of my goal to work out at the rec center in the mornings. My motivation has been majorly lacking but I kept chanting, "you're going, you're going, you're going." I was going to Little Engine the crud out of my goal. As I was getting ready, and to my surprise, I opened my sock drawer to discover that nearly all my socks were missing. I only own Harry Potter socks and my kids have a habit of "borrowing" them without asking. I stared at my meager options and thought, "This. This can be the reason why I can't go work out today." And maybe if there hadn't been a matching set, I would've allowed the excuse to solidify, but I groaned and grabbed a pair. And I did it! I worked out! Day number 1 complete! In a pair of black capri leggings and calf-length Death Eater tube socks. Voldemort would be so proud.

I've been thinking about this all day. My mom would never have let me wear her socks. Not that she was a stingy, sock-hoarding monster, but she had her boundaries. I couldn't wear her shoes even though we were the same size. She would absolutely never let me near her craft drawers. To be a crafter's daughter and forbidden to touch the little compartments full of buttons, and ribbons, and dreams... It felt totally unfair.

But now I get it. The kids steal my socks and they often never return. I could've released dozens of house elves with the amount of socks I am missing! As I am typing this, my daughters are crafting and to my utter horror, using my "nice scissors" to cut through tin foil. So to my mother, I now absolve you of the heinous crime of not sharing your stuff with me. I get it. And I'm glad you were able to enjoy your socks, and your shoes, and your craft supplies, uncorrupted.
