Marriage

WRITING PROMPT: Marriage

My husband and I are super competitive. That descriptor is not one I ever would've placed on myself before getting married, but marriage to this guy has changed me. Or maybe he just awakened the sleeping beast inside me.

When our oldest was a toddler,  my husband and I invented "Blocketball". Basically, we would dump out the blocks, put the container across the room and see who could chuck the most blocks back into the box. It was a very exciting game.

We bet on which movie trailers will play before a movie. We bet on our miniature golf games (one of my favorite activities). While driving, we compete in the alphabet game or who can spot the most yellow cars. We have burping contests, trivia matches,  board game challenges, etc.

My competitive spirit isn't as good in execution as it is in my mind. Barry kicks my trash in trivia (I just don't know sports or world geography). He is way more strategic in board games. Even though I'm a  better speller, he always gets the most points in Boggle because he knows how to play those darned triple letter scores like a boss. And to no one's surprise, he is more athletic than me.

The one game that I am weirdly, unexpectedly better at than him is that basketball game at arcades; The one with two hoops and you compete to see who can score the most baskets. At first, we thought my higher score was a fluke (like I said, sports aren't my thing.) But over the years, I have consistently beat him at the game. You better believe I will hold that over his head for my entire life, because it's my one skill!

For book club this month, my group read Anxious People, by  Fredrick Backman. One of the characters is talking about a love story and says, "theirs was more like the story of a child finding the perfect playmate."

That quote has resonated with me. That is exactly how I see my marriage. We aren't the most epically romantic story for the books, but we love to have fun together.

And I would bet that he'd agree.
