WRITING PROMPT: New Hobbies
I am not the kind of mom who gets up and makes breakfast for my kids. This has never bothered me but I've always wished my kids ate something a little more substantial than cereal. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, right? (My husband hates that saying. He doesn't like eating breakfast. )
We've tried buying pre-made frozen breakfast stuff but those packages aren't made for large families. A friend of mine, and fellow blogger, wrote about making freezer breakfasts for her kids, and I found it intriguing. I've made freezer meals before. I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to breakfast. I wanted to try.
Just days before school started, I spent so much time in the kitchen creating 20 breakfast burritos and a few dozen pancakes. It brought me an astounding amount of satisfaction to stuff it all the freezer. My kids were super excited about having something yummy for breakfast.
And then it started. The first day the kids were all happy with their burritos. The next day, one of them started complaining about the tortilla getting hard. So they tried different ways of microwaving it. (Don't tell me I could've put it in the oven. If I had that kind of time and motivation in the morning, I wouldn't be making freezer food!)
Once the pancakes were gone, most of the kids moved on to instant oatmeal, leaving a few burritos in the freezer. So for the next go around, I made ham, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches. Following a recipe, I cooked all the eggs in some 9x13 pans and made another 20 sandwiches. But some of the kids thought the egg consistency was weird. Some of them thought the frozen eggs were a weird color (the seasoning made them look a little green, so I'll give them that.) These certain children abandoned the freezer for cereal once more.
My third attempt was supposed to be French Toast. That loaf of bread has passed its expiration date, sadly waiting in the back of the cupboard for someone to find the desire to cook it.
Instead of feeling underwhelmed just about dinner, I now get the opportunity twice a day to hear the dissatisfaction about my cooking.
So, the motivation to feed my kids is dead. You win, cereal. You can have 'em. I have singlehandedly eaten enough breakfast sandwiches that I never want to look at one again.
Pre-making breakfast... not my new hobby.
I'd just like to point out that the last time my kids cooked me breakfast in bed, they gave me eggs with a side of microwaved corn and broccoli and a glass of milk with flavored coffee creamer mixed in. And I ate the whole dang thing and said it was delicious.
